Amsterdam builds a new quarter in the IJ-lake, called IJburg. On one of the islands - Steigereiland - you could buy a site for your own unique row house. There are few restrictions and no aesthetic jury. In the Vaillant-lane our client bought one of the 50 sites to realise the house of their dreams. The client`s wishes were (p)raised and leading in the spatial design. The result: a dynamic open underworld as a route to the quiet private spaces on top. In the dynamic part a split level creates a connection between the kitchen, the living, and the workspace.
The structure of the house is emphasized by the steel portal in the open interior of the first floor. It is the division between frontside and backside. The frontside has two different naves. One of them contains the vertical movement. The backside has one nave with its own symmetry.
The long stairs and their voids drill inside the upper spaces and unite the building. The facades became optimal consequences of the spaces inside in relation to the surroundings. The lane façade shows the two naves with the emphasis on the two large spaces, looking into the opposite street. The living can be transformed into a large loggia.
