As a small enrichment of the housing stock, Waterloft.nl and Mirck Architecture propose houseboat communities. In the lowlands is a lot of water with a big and innovative shipping industry. Old boats are continuously available to start a new life. The houseboats need water and a connection to the mainland. The connection has been upgraded to a multifunctional space.
The pilot project is located in the Cruquius Harbour in Amsterdam. The houseboat community consists of ten ships. The multifunctional space is built up as a (re-used) wooden deck construction. It contains functions like: an indoor and outdoor meeting space, a sauna, a playground, storages, and a communal installation. In the Cruquius design a cafe makes a part of the deck a lively public space.
