Tennis Clubhouse

Amsterdam - 2025
Clubhouse Tie-Breakers

In 2001, the Amsterdam tennis club Tie-Breakers had a clubhouse and a tennis hall built on the east side of Flevopark. The club has since grown considerably, and the building was in need of major maintenance work. This was used as an opportunity to enlarge the existing clubhouse and make it more sustainable.

The preliminary design was created by a number of club association members, including Sander Mirck. The plan was developed by Mirck Architecture and completed in 2025 by contractor Teerenstra. The construction team and club members celebrated the result together with the club’s 30th anniversary.

The clubhouse opens up in two directions towards the tennis park and entryway through a glazed façade protected by a generous overhang providing shade and shelter. The building is inviting and connects indoor and outdoor spaces.

Concept and routing

Many club members were involved in the construction and interior design, and their insights gained over the past 25 years have been incorporated into the renovation. For example, the striking bar in the heart of the clubhouse was built by club member and interior designer Thecla Gieles.

The buildings are no longer connected to the gas grid, and the heat pumps are optimally powered by hundreds of PV panels placed on the roof above the hall, in combination with a battery. The roofs of the clubhouse are planted with sedum. Wood was used extensively, and the existing steel structure has been reused.
